Toxicity of Carbon & Silicon Nanotubes & Carbon Nanofibers Reported by FEFU Scientists

Nanoparticles are a wide range of applying, included microalgae Heterosigmaakashivo damage cells, medicine wrongly. This species of algae is extensively spread in the Russian Far East marine location. The aggressive toxic exhibited at 100/mg carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and silicon nanotubes (SiNTs) concentrations in the freshwater or sea.

The group of international researchers of toxicologists led by Far Eastern Federal University (FEFU) scientists who have researched the adverse effects of silicon nanotubes (SiNTs) and carbon nanofibers (CNFs), carbon nanotubes (CNTs) that are contained in the composites and plastic materials. In the Environmental, research magazine the result of research has published.

The factor why the researchers paid attention to this issue is that the toxic nanoparticles effect is the fast growth of their applying in various world-manufacturing fields. It is stated that in 2020 the CNT’s world market will reach 5, 64 billion USD. That is double compared to 2000 when the USD was 2,26 billion.

At the time of plastic and composites, fabrication SiNTs and CNT added in their structure to improve the final materials of physical properties. In the latest medicine different nature of nanotubes are proposed as the drug delivery systems and drugs absorbents. Currently, all types of carbon-based synthesized non-particles are described as their physical parameters. However, Scientists have declared that for the risk of modeling and appraisal lack of data toxicity is essential.

Scientists chose the unicellular marine microalgae that are Heterosigma akashiwo separated from Peter the Great Gulf of Japan Sea for the research purpose of nanotoxicology. This kind of algae is typical for the Russian Far East, and it could be relevant for microalgae local marine basin. Another major factor is that the thin cell wall of H. akashiwo could render its susceptible for its chemical pollution.

With the guidance of OECD No.201 (OECD, 2006) with minor modifications, this experiment is performed. The scientist took the significant reduction of algal cells as an experimental sample for the toxic effect of nanotubes. The lousy experiment tests were made in 24-well culture plates.

Forensic science of the Medical school at the University of Crete and the University Hospital of Heraklion commented about the silicon nanotubes, and they said its more toxic than carbon. But the carbon-based compounds can cause more neurodegenerative disorders, mainly for the oxidative accumulation stress in antioxidant mechanism protection.
